HighMag: Strategic Collaboration Advances Europe’s Battery Future

A game-changing strategic partnership has just become official, bringing together three huge Horizon Europe projects: HighMag, ANGeLiC, and TALISSMAN. The goal is clear: to radically speed up the development of Generation 5 battery technology and ensure Europe is the leader in the global move toward clean transport.

The three projects teams recently got together to lock down their specific collaboration areas, trade early insights, and set up a joint plan for public outreach, all of which is designed to maximize the impact and efficiency of their research.

Unlocking the Next Era of Post-Lithium Technology

The projects cover unique and complementary areas of the Generation 5 market, which is why this joint effort is essential: it secures a broad, future-proof battery portfolio for all of Europe:

  • HighMag is pioneering rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs), exploring both Mg-Sulphur and Mg-Metal concepts. By focusing on abundant magnesium, this project solves resource security issues, offers built-in safety (it’s dendrite-free!), and targets an impressive high energy density of 500 Wh/kg.
  • ANGeLiC is specializing in Generation 5 lithium-sulphur batteries specifically for heavy-duty applications. Their unique approach uses Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) to protect lithium-metal anodes, which simultaneously boosts performance (also targeting 500 Wh/kg) while reducing the need for scarce metals.
  • TALISSMAN is advancing gelled and fully solid-state lithium-sulphur concepts for aerospace and electric vehicles. By using non-flammable electrolytes, the project completely eliminates the risk of thermal runaway, aiming for the highest energy density of the group (up to 550 Wh/kg), with a heavy focus on industrial-scale manufacturing.

Making this partnership official significantly boosts the projects’ combined strength, ensuring their research directly benefits the entire European ecosystem.

The core work starts with Cross-Chemistry Learning: by regularly trading findings between fundamentally different chemistries (Magnesium versus Lithium), the group can drastically accelerate innovation and strategically avoid wasted or duplicated effort.

For Strategic Positioning, the projects will work closely with the BATT4EU Partnership and Battery2030+ initiatives to perfectly align their innovations with Europe’s long-term technology roadmap.

Finally, Unified Outreach is handled through collaborative workshops and focused initiatives, making sure that policymakers and industry leaders receive clear, consistent, and unified updates on the major breakthroughs in Generation 5 battery technology.

This new collaboration sends a powerful message: Europe is fully committed to leading the global transition toward sustainable, next-generation battery technologies.

The three project teams are eager to connect with manufacturers, researchers, and policymakers. We encourage everyone to join the conversation and help seize this unique opportunity.
